This message serves to offer an example to the advantages of getting your horses micro chipped.
On Monday 2 November sometime around 3 pm - 4pm a horse was stolen from a field whereby the wooden post and rail fence was sawed through to gain access.
The police were informed and also the microchip company who circulated details of the horse to all the ferry ports. On Tuesday the following day the police rang to say that the horse had been located in Hollyhead, Wales, a ferry had left for Ireland and the horse had been left tied to a railing.
A week before the theft, the owner had noticed that her horse had a small plait in its mane, almost like a tangle. This apparently is a method used to mark horses before they are stolen, the thief then knows which horse is to be taken.
The ferry port at Hollyhead do not check for horse passports or microchips, this horse had no passport but was micro chipped, possibly the reason why the animal was left behind as the thief usually scan an animal before loading the on to the ferry. It is apparently common practice for horses entering Ireland to be microchip checked, the horse also had a large obvious scar, which may have been a contributing factor in saving it.
Should you find a small plait in your horses mane or tail, do not ignore it, a lot of people are unaware of its significance.
If you horse is not micro chipped, please consider doing so, any horse could be at risk.
