| your post about your dog is here now ...................................................................................................................................... hi I have only recently joined and have a four year old epileptic Dalmation. I had a discussion with my partner over what was the right thing to do in regards to her health as she is sick and she is not going to get much if any improvement in her condition, so at what point is enough enough? We all love her but at mo she currently takes 14 tablets per day, she has an mri booked for next week and she is being checked out for a problem with her endocrine system as well. The meds she takes make her permenantly hungry and thirsty so she is swelling like a balloon. So now wearing a muzzle in the house when out to stop the food stealing. The meds are also making her very clumsy as she keeps losing control of her hind legs as some times she appears to either drag one or the other or have difficulty in standing up. She also now appears to have accidents at night so has to wear dog nappies as my sanity is at stake if I have to clear up wee in the morning one more time. This apart from the fact that she has grand mals every couple of weeks in clusters and petit mals (either tremoring in a part of the body or snapping jaws) daily. So my main moan is it is bloody unfair as their are so many people who do not deserve their pets and do not treat them well yet their pets are fine and i am trying to do my best but kinda fighting a losing battle. As is it fair to keep going or should we say goodbye? As when would I want people to leave me alone. So to put a healthy animal down for no reason seems ludicrous to me. | |

I feel for you hun I really do. your poor girlie sounds in a bad way and your right some people don't deserve pets. I am not Familiar with epilepsy in dogs, although Bailey sister was put to sleep aged 3 because of the fits and her condition as you have described sound the same, and I know how soul destroying it is for you. if all the Meds in the world cannot cure her condition you have to search your heart for the answer.
I had a GSD 'Saffie' that had Cancer when she was 5 1/2. the vet said there is nothing more we could do. My god I Idolised her, I was going to keep her with me as long as I could, she was my soul mate I wouldn't let her leave me. I took her home because she looked well and her eyes where bright and shiny and she still had a happy look about her, about a week maybe 2 went by we struggled along slowly but she was still here and alive. one day she struggled over to sit by my feet she put her head on my lap and stared at me but her eyes where different, they where dull and cloudy and I dunno, it was like she was saying "Mum I've had enough, I'm Tired, I cant walk anymore, i can't run, i get up I fall over".. her eyes where no longer happy eyes.. I sat and hugged her for over 3 hrs, I rang the vet and he came to our home and she went peacefully in my arms... and I know in my heart I did the right thing for her, Her eyes told me.
I am sure your darling girl's eyes will tell you too. you have loved her since the start and she trusts you without question, she also trusts you will do what is best for her and stay with her when the worst decision for you is the best for her.
She will tell you Jess i'm sure of this. Maybe she already has. Sending ((((Hugs)))) your way. Karen xx | |

| Aww Jess, your decision is heartbreaking Karen, I am now full of tears as well Jess, my girl has petit mals, and I may one day be in your position, her brother has already had to be PTS because of his grand mal clusters, he didn't know where he was and lost all his bowels and urinary control, he didn't recognise his home or owners This I feel is a truely personal decision, only you know if her life is too difficult for her to live and how much she is suffering or not Regardless of what anyone thinks of me, I will never allow Misty to live a life of confusion and suffering, she is the most beautiful girl in the world with a lust for life and every morning when she is well she just wants to have fun and enjoy herself, if the day ever comes when she no longer can live a quality life then I will let her go. I feel your agony and how you are trying to do your best for her, I am sure whatever you decide we will be here for you and fully understand the love and devotion you have and how much your doing | |

| big hugs for everybody ... ive never had a dog that has suffered with epilepsy but i experienced it through my friends DDB.... he was only a young boy when the decision was made to finally put him out of his pain... he was having several seizures a day, not even the medication was working in the end...it was the kindest and hardest thing to do what ever you decide will be the best for you and your girl | |

| my girl had fits many years ago, to start with she only had them when she was in season, the vet said get her spayed, which we did, big mistake about 2 weeks after she would have several in 1 day, what made our decition a little easier [ if possible ] was the vet , he told us WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF WE WERE NOT AROUND AND SHE HAD ONE, so we said goodbye ,it is the most heartbreaking decition any has to make but think of the dog first, good luck what ever you decide | |

| Ive found it difficult to post as I have never seen a dog have a fit so I really have no first hand knowledge of it but I can understand the heartbreak it must cause for anyone to see their much loved pet suffer in such a way and reading these posts has had me in tears sending big hugs to everyone | |

| Thanks for all your concern.
At the mo are going to keep to her appointments and see where things take us as I do believe at the mo she is still happy. As she is truly great with kids as I have three and she will let them do absolutely anything with her for example when out at the weekend we saw a toddler and his parents asked if they could come over and she gave him a slurp then let him pet and look in her ears and do general toddler manhandling whilst she just sat wagging her tail. So at the moment we are seeing what happens next but will keep you all posted. Thanks for being an ear to talk to as it is hard and I am determined not to be selfish but am hoping we have some time left as we are still having some fun and have holiday this week. My favourite (lol) walking in the Peak Districts.

| Hi Jess. Been here and very recently too. The most love you can show your dog is to make the decision for him when the time is right because he can't do it for himself. | |
