| Does anyone know anything about this?
I've just been told that its illegal to use more than one vet at a time by someone claiming to be a vet on another forum.
To be honest, she was moaning about people using vets like I do, go to one for the cheaper vacs etc and go to another vets for the other stuff and is claiming it is illegal to do but I cant find anything about this on google and I dont believe her. She doesnt like people phoning her at 2am in an emergency when these people use a cheaper vets for their vacs. Well, if they dont want to provide this service, then close down. It looks to me like shes just having a gripe because people are not automatically paying her for the more routine stuff.
If this is true, how do you get a second opinion on anything? Why should we be made to pay higher prices for some stuff but less for others depending on which vets we choose?
To me, I pay for the service I get so I should be able to choose where I want to go for the service I require. Just because I shop at Asda, does that mean I cant go to Sainsburys and get other stuff?

| Would be typical of this country to make a rule like this though f**k it, I cant find any info and the vets know I'm registered with more than one and they dont care :nhy: so I'm not gonna stop cos some vet is moaning shes not making as much as she would like | |

| Never heard this before. I do know that if you have had an animal treated by one vet and you want a second opinion the second vet will always refer back to the first but I was given the impression that this was more a case of etiquette rather than law. Its the same with farriers. | |

| Oh, that reminds me of another rant about vets. Jake, MIL's dog has a retained testicle and a hernia that her vets said needed sorting. After being told all sorts of different things about it all, she went to another vets and asked them. They retrieved the records from the first vet, no trace of a hernia according to the records or of something else, I forget not what it was It was all messed up anyway. | |

| How maddening. I dont have a lot of time for vets I'm afraid. I know thats a generalisation but they are just a necessary evil as far as I am concerned! | |

i hate my equine vet they are shit basically small animal vets that have to do horses due to the area we live! the second opinion we got from a diff vets well they were amazing but are too far away to be our reg vet due to if we have a emergency but they said will come out and do routine things very odd lol
im like shelley i love my dogs vets they are great and dont charge the earth either

| no its not illegal. other breeders use our vet for routine stuff. but for hip score & elbow scores they use another practice who is slightly cheaper but the main reason is the practice is larger and can turn the dog round in a couple of hours our vet does not have a problem with any of them doing that. when axle got his hips and elbows done he was in AT 9AM NOT BACK TO 4PM but with the bigger practice they can have dog back before mid day | |

| Cheers Kenny. It certainly doesnt make sense for you to be stuck with only one vet, when did I sign that contract? Stupid woman, shes certainly not doing any of the decent vets any favours is she? Now we have another that looks like they are just after money I'm hoping other people on there put her straight too :2445: | |

| This was the actual post
"It would seem quite a lot of people have one vet for the bread and butter stuff and then use someone else for the big stuff. But, its actually illegal to go between different vets. Everytime you go back and forth the vet you have gone to should ring the old one and get all your history and transfer you onto their books. If not its called insurrection (I think, going back a bit here to my exams) and is not allowed.
It drives me nuts when someone rings me at 2am to say they have a problem but they usually go to say, Companion Care as its the main culprit, but they can't get to Leeds for the out of hours and want to come to us. They don't want to come to us for vaccinations or neutering which is our main money income area, but they still expect us to be available to them whenever they need us with a full compliment of equipment and staff."
My reply was
"I didnt know it was illegal. As far as I'm concerned, I'm paying for the service I get so I should be able to choose where I go. Like shopping, just because I go to Asda, does that mean I'm banned from going to Sainsburys?
I dont agree with this ruling at all. Thanks for telling me though, maybe this is something that should be told to more people!!!"
Incidentally, both vets know we are registered with another vets. CC will neuter at 6 months which I need but Abbey doesnt and CC is crap (they said Maggie was fully grown at 33 kilos and 8 months old, amongst other things) so why should I choose one or the other? Oh, not one of them have asked for any records either, they know the dogs have only had their vacs.

| Tilly has travelled about with Chloe so much that I've lost count of the number of vets who've treated her. They all know that other vets have seen her but none of them seemed too bothered | |

| Actually, thinking about it, when Chloe worked at an eventing yard they had a local vet to do the routine stuff like vaccinations and then they were taken down to Newmarket for anything more serious so it cant be illegal. | |

at the end of the day there is a lot of ppl out there who dont vaccinate for what ever reason, so cos they dont do they deserve not to have a vet come out to them in a emergency?
