Subject: Loose Leash Walking Mon Feb 16, 2009 3:05 pm
Hi every1 i am currently trying to train Blaze to walk nicely on his lead i dont mind if hes walking infront of me so long as he walking and not pulling me we have made some progress he will walk nicely after a while just wondering if any1 can help with those 1st 5/10 mins when he pulls what i do is i position him by my side say here and then carry on walking if he gets infront and pulls hes postioned back to my side with my command here and a treat and so on so forth however those 1st 5/10 mins he will have his treat and then pull agen like he ha forgotton EVERYTHING i have taught him when i no he can do it, i dont use any tools just a normal collar and lead and alot ov treats and praise i was hopin to train him without the use ov tools so unless he gets really bad and i feel like im gettin nowhere then i will introduce either a gentle leader or a half check collar or a martingale as i think half checks are actually called any help is greatly appreicated

I tend to do a mixture of lots of turns, speed up and slow down and sudden stops and sits for a couple of mins at the start of a walk and they soon calm down. I dont give them the choice of where they want to go, I drag them about where I want to go until they calm down and walk properly.
I look a bit of a prat but it works for me and we dont really get far whilst doing this, we pretty much stay in the same place I started at, give or take a few feet, if this makes sense, then we actually start walking when they stop pulling me. I think its cos they dont know where I'm going to go next so they start watching me as they cant anticipate.

ok hun hes young isnt he what i would do is first teach him in the house also by using treats i had a vid that i showed sandra cant think which one it was tho?
what i do is show the dog the treat so hes nibbling it but cant steal it walk a couple of steps with him chewing at it and reward always reward him whilst hes at your side hun never tell him heel wen hes pulling either we bring commands in later hope that makes sence
wen im out i do the same with my young pups but i use high value rewards such as garlic liver and keep it intreating like paula says if treats dont work i also do as paula does and talk to the dog make it a game and fun to be beside you
another way if all this doesnt work is the slip lead up on the weakest part of the neck you have much more control that way and wen he pulls a gentle but sharp tug to the side will correct him
i will write up more for you later hun as i feel im babbling as been a long day lol hope this helps
