Hot spots (otherwise known as
acute moist dermatitis)

are inflamed, infected areas of skin that
spread rapidly due to licking and scratching. Redness, oozing, itchiness
and sometimes hair loss are all symptoms. Some dog are more prone to hot spots than others, but this pesky problem can affect any dog Here are several steps to treating hot spots.

Trim the area around the hot spot with scissors. If the area is too big, you should shave it. Exposing it to air will dry out the moisture and help speed healing.

Clean the area with a mild water-based astringent or antiseptic, or even baby shampoo, and pat dry.Apply hydrocortisone spray to stop the itching and help speed healing.
If you don't have access right away, you can give your dog Benadryl to
stop the itch in the meantime, but check with your vet first.

Prevent your dog from biting, licking or scratching the area(s). Placing
an Elizabethan collar (plastic cone) around your dog's neck will keep
him from biting and licking at it.

Keep an eye on the area to make sure it continues to heal and doesn't worsen or spread. Hot spots often require a visit to the vet who will likely prescribe topical medication usually in the form of a
spray such as Miconosol (antifungal) and Gentamicen/Betamethasone, and
possibly oral antibiotics. The vet may also give your dog a cortisone
injection to jump start the healing

Natural Cures for Hot Spots in Dogs

Salt Water

Make a salt water solution of approximately two cups warm water and one teaspoon salt. Soak a washcloth in this mixture, wring most of the water out and apply directly to the hot spot. Hold the cloth on the hot spot for at least a few minutes. If there is any pus in the hot spot, this remedy will remove it. It will also reduce any swelling. Do this at least a couple of times every day.
Witch Hazel

Witch hazel can be purchased at most drug stores and will provide a coolant for the hot spot. The witch hazel will pull some of the heat out of the hot spot, which will provide some relief for the dog.

Black Tea Bags

Boil some black tea— not herbal. You can find this at most grocery stores. After the tea bags have cooled down, apply them directly to the hot spots. Let them stay on the hot spots for at least five minutes and repeat up to six times a day. Black tea has tannic acids, which can heal the sores quickly and help dry out the hot spots.

    Prevention

  1. Preventing your dog from licking and scratching is also key to improving these hot spots. If you see your dog licking or scratching, try and get his mind on something else by giving him a treat or playing outside. Keeping the dog’s nails trimmed will also help prevent deeper scratches, which are easily infected.

•Machine sexing is the second oldest method of determining the sex of day-old baby chickens. The machine method came into existence in the 1950s. Today these machines, the Keeler Optical and the Chicktester, are no longer in production and there are no parts in production for the machines that may still be used. These machines worked by a telescopic tube with a light inserted into an evacuated vent of the baby chicken in question. The tester carefully looks into the lens of the instrument and makes a determination of the sex of the chicken by seeing whether the chicken has testes or ovaries.•Feather sexing became possible in 1969 after several years of genetic research by the Tegels Poultry
Breeding Company. This method used to determine the sex of newly hatched chicks is only possible if a female from a slow-feathering breed is crossed with a male from a fast-feathering breed. The sex of the chicks produced from this cross can be determined during the first 48 hours after hatching by looking at the primary and secondary feathers located on the chick's wings. The primary feathers will be noticeably longer than the secondary feathers on a female chick. On a male, the primary and secondary feathers are the same length.
•Color sexing is the newest method of determining the sex of a day-old chicken. In 1975, commercial breeders were developed and the day-old chickens of these breeders can be identified as hens and roosters by the color of their plumage. The plumage on day-old hens is generally white while the plumage on day-old roosters is brown.
