I have never had a dog that hates being brushed and groomed as much as Marley does. I have brushed him at first on a daily basis since he was 6 weeks old ( now its every other day) and every time we have the same old carry on. He growls at the brush, runs away or he grabs my arm when I'm brushing him ( he doesnt bite its like puppy mouthing) I end up exhausted I feel as though I have gone 10 rounds with Lennox Lewis every day!!!!
I thought grooming was an enjoyable pastime for both dog and owner.......not in this house it isnt!!!!

we have that with fred some days jude, mainly hes alright but some days especially if the OH is helping, he will growl ...otherwise he wont sit still, but if i get the hoover on him, he will sit there lapping it up lol!
then other days he is as good as gold, depends what mood he is in.

Maggie is a wriggly madam too if I want to do something with her.

I normally get her to sit, do what I need to do for a few seconds then give her a treat. I found I can increase the time between treats gradually until eventually I can do what I like and she will sit while I do it.

Lexus doesn't like being groomed either, but i find that it helps to take him for a long walk before grooming him, and when we're done with the grooming he gets a nice massage if he's been a good boy and we'll play for a while with his kong.. the only treat he'll eat is cooked liver, so we usually play with him as a reward. For him the playing works better than any treats.. he'll do anything to get to play with his kong. and he only gets to play with it when we're training

ohhhh wen i got xena my rescue long coat she had been gashed with clippers ect she had the scars so hated being brushed i had to muzzle her first as she would attack lol

first i would teach marley to stand on command *unless he knows this* as this will help with the grooming use treats ect and get him used to running your hands through his coat first just to get him used to you tugging gently on his coat with out the brush first lol then get a soft brush and do a bit put a handfull of treats on the floor first then as hes eating gently brush and before his finishes his treats stop brushing every day run your hands through his coat and the hair around the ears *gen the more sensative areas* and build up slowly hun
if he mouths you at any point correct him straight away any figiting correct also you will meet him half way so to speak so he does also
see if this helps if not let me know and i will give you another way

 You could try tieing the dog up to stop them messing around.

Thanks all for your advice! I have tried your advice Farah and he is better than he first was but its still a bit of a battle. He will stand to command and I distract him with treats while I groom him and when he mouths he gets told off. he is used to me running my fingers through his fur I do it every day and he loves that. I just think he loves being awkward!!!
