| My friends dog had pups this weekend and one was born dead. When they showed it to her so that she knew it was dead she started to eat it!! Is that normal? | |

| yes its normal, in the wild they would eat all dead pups because the smell would encourage other animals round which could kill live pups , thats why they clean up after pups as well, | |

yes Bev, something to do with natural instincts, in the wild they eat their dead ones so as not to attract other animals looking for and killing the live ones.

| Melanie: I don't think the cats did it hun without a doubt it was the pups Mum. I have asked around and googled it too. - Quote :

It is not unheard of for a dam to eat her puppies if she is stressed or disturbed during or just after whelping.

| I would have to agree with everyone else it is more likely that the pups mother ate the pups. She would never let the cats near her pups. To be honest and im not being nasty but the cats should never have been allowed anywhere near the bitch and her pups, the bitch could have killed them, I never leave my pups alone at such a tender age... anything can and does very often happen just because mum can be so easily spooked and squash or eat them. Such a tragic story !!!
RIP little ones !!!!! | |
